A couple of 1/48 Rhodesian aircraft

Postby AndrewDoppel » Wed Jun 12, 2019 9:35 pm

I was asked by a friend if I could build him a couple of 1/48 aircraft to go in his Rhodesian Air Force collection, which he is going to display later this year at ScaleAct. There are a couple of people helping him out but my contribution to his collection is a 1/48 Tiger Moth and a 1/48 Augusta Bell 205.
The Tiger Moth is the old 1/48 SMER kit which has its issues and I hope to get the opportunity to re-do it when the Airfix offering hits the shelves.

The other is the 1/48 Italeri Augusta Bell 205 (or UH-1D) with a couple of modifications to accurately represent a Rhodesian (classified as Cheetah) one as used in the 'Bush War' with no serial numbers evident and only the tail rotor warning and Cobra Sqn marking on the tail. The main additions were the engine heat deflectors, modified aerial and upwards deflecting exhaust pipe.

These took me just over a week to complete from box to show. I hope you like them.

Tony,

The SMER kit isn't that bad. Good it isn't, but with a little work comes up okay. I'm sure the Airfix one will be better. To get the best result on this kit you need to sand off the serials and roundels which may take half an hour, then scribe in the panel lines. Put the wing struts in and fill any residual gaps and sand, then do the same to the fuselage and tail, paint, drill locator holes and rig.

Cheers Hugh,

It was a good break away from other builds I was struggling with to complete. Hopefully one will be done later and here again.

Very nice work on both! Makes me want to get my Aeroclub Tiger out and start it.

They look good. The Rhodesian and South African camo schemes always look the business.
