1/72 Airfix Vampire T35 75 Sqn RAAF

Where possible I like to model aircraft that have a link to our current RAAF Squadrons. I've previously built a few Vampire trainers using the horrid Merlin kit and the Uncle Les conversion for the Heller FB5, including one in 76 Sqn markings. When the Airfix kit emerged I grabbed one with the idea that another fighter Squadron flew one with unit markings but it sat on the shelf until Roger answered my plea for photos.

The Airfix kit is a little tricky in parts and some Mr Surfacer was required in places, especially around the booms. I used the kit seats with added firing handles and PE belts. The canopy wasn't the best fit and I might have been better using one of my many Aeroclub vacforms. The ADF fairing is from an old Plane Bits set. I didn't like the wheel hubs and the block tread isn't correct for this aircraft, some Heller Mistral wheels from spares were the closest I could get.

I used Montex masks for the canopy which saved hours but they weren't a perfect fit. The silver is again Tamiya Silver Leaf straight from the spray can. Decals were a mix of kit, spares and some custom made rudder markings. The top hat and cane are a bit over size, don't tell anyone. I tried to print these myself but my Epson printer doesn't like decal sheet, my old Canon had no such problems.

I think I'm done with twin seat Vampires unless anyone finds one in 77 Sqn markings.

I'm not older than dirt, but I do remember when it was new.
