HMS Victorious in Sydney

Don't know if this is the right place for this but does anyone know any background to this visit by HMS Victorious to Sydney and also why there is a Firefly on board?

Can't offer any background to the visit but the Firefly looks to have target tug markings on her so that might explain the presence of a visitor on deck. Gunnery practice for the embarked FAA air wing?

Royal Navy Far East Fleet ships were frequent visitors to Sydney right through to the withdrawal from East of Suez and beyond. There are lots of photos of various RN carriers at FBE including this one in 1966, which I understand was when they were to transport an ex-RAN Firefly WB271 back to Singapore, apparently after it was purchased by the then CO of 826 SQN before eventually ending up with the RN FAA Historic Aircraft Flight. It crashed in 2003 killing the crew.

Does anyone have any information or (better still a reputable source) on whether HMS Victorious was ever offered for sale to and turned down by the RAN?

(and Yes I know HMS Hermes was and was turned down.)

According to my former neighbour, ex RAN FAA pilot John Goble the money raised to purchase the Firefly also came from RAN FAA personal, apparently there was an agreed condition that the RAN Firefly be restored in RAN colours (which it was not). I saw that Firefly fly many times at UK airshows, lovely aircraft to in see in the air.
