Calling all RAAF "Know it alls"

Postby asho77 » Sat Mar 08, 2014 2:49 pm

Guy's, I'd love to build a model of the RAAF UH-1 (B/C) Huey but I just cannot find any colour photos of it anywhere to work out the paint scheme. Know I know it had silver, day glow orange and white on it..but where? Also....decals, where can I get the "RAAF RESCUE" and serial number decals from? The tri-colours would be easy to paint and the kangaroo roundels I'm sure I have somewhere. Anyway..all and any help would be greatly appreciated. Regards, Gav

Image

My guess is...
White- Across the roof to the intake section, tail boom on "RAAF RESCUE" section and tip of tail with serial number
Orange- Top of tailboom over the white panel that ha RAAF RESCUE on it
Silver- Rest of the body

What do you guys think?

GAV,
" know it alls" has a harsh remark to it.... just a simple "help" would have done.

I would have a suggest it would have to be the same font USAF Armadillo but i dont think there is any makings been done for it,
Cheers
Brendon.

My guess would be to add yellow for the band to where RAAF RESCUE is written up to the point where you said orange would be across the top of the tail boom.

Sorry Brendon, no offence implied, but I do need someone who knows it all about this aircraft at least. ;)

G'day Gav,

do these help? The first two are scans from an old RAAF Museum Calendar, the other one is from the web. I can't remember where but full credit to the owners whoever you are!!! Black USAF 45 degree style lettering is available from several decal manufacturers.

And on further examination of your original pic Gav, and another few on ADF-Serials, there were some subtle changes to 384's colour scheme during her early days it seems. Never noticed before...

The bottom pic is a later one judging from the SARAH antenna between the pilots door and the chin window. This was the homing system for the Sabre bang seat beacon. Also, if looking at the ADF Serials pics, note the single windscreen wiper. The one for the co-pilot was a later mod.

BRILLIANT !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Exactly what I was looking for. The best kit for this would be the Italeri one I think? Some of the schemes vary in between all the pics but at least I can now see the bottom was day glow orange.

Some more photos and drawings from Stewart Wilsons and Aussie Iroquois books. Note that there are no wind deflectors fitted in front of the cabin sliding doors.

Thanks John...I think I need to invest in that book. What's the details so I can find a copy online? I think name of book, author, publisher and ISBN number should do it.
