RAAF PBM Mariner

Postby daneby » Sat Oct 31, 2020 9:27 am

Hello
Im planning on building the RAAF Mariner in 1/72 and was wondering what is the best base kit to start
The local hobby shop has both the minicraft variant's, the 5 and 5A

Thanks in advance

Hi Daneby. Here's a blurb from ADF Serials describing some distinguishing features of the RAAF Mariners. They were -3S variants apparently, I don't know how they differ from a -5 or 5A but it's a start... http://www.adf-serials.com.au/research/raaf-pbm.htm

There are a number of differences between the PBM-3 and PBM-5/5A but it is easier to start with the -5 kit as it does not have the undercarriage of the 5A.

The RAAF PBMs were flying boats not amphibians.

The plastic in the two kits is pretty much identical. The amphibian provides a few useless extras - inaccurate wheels, bombs for bomb bays that were always closed etc. The kit is not that bad but does have a few shortcomings. Unfortunately you can't make a RAAF example without a lot of work or by use of the Red Roo conversion - currently out of stock. It will be re-issued in due course.

The Rareplanes kit is for sale on the AARG website;

That's a vacform kit. Not everyone's cup of tea. That said, I haven't built one so I don't know if it's as hard as it looks. Must try one sometime soon and find out.

Mark Davies built one using the Rareplanes kit and Red Roo GR.1 upgrade. It came out well. I don't think I would choose it as my first vacform.
