Sydney E14Y info?

Postby Damian C » Tue Oct 13, 2020 2:57 pm

I note the Fujimi E14Y is shortly going to be reissued by Hobby 2000.

Might anyone know what numbers were on the aircraft that flew over Sydney Harbour?

When I build one for the AWM Garth Occy had information on this.
I'm not older than dirt, but I do remember when it was new.

I have that information somewhere and we'll make sure we add an extra decal to the kits we bring in if required - it looks like I-25 may be there anyway.
At the moment it's one-way traffic from Australia to Poland. We can send parcels there but they can't send them here. Why? No idea - ask Australia Post, it's their rule.

There were lots of overflights by Glen's. I-25 in Feb 1942 which also did flights over Melbourne & Hobart. I-29 on 23 May 1942 (which crashed whilst being recovered and sank off the heads) and I-21 on the 30th (before the midget sub attacks). Not clear but maybe I-11 launched a Glen in July 1942 and I-21 again on 19 Feb 1943.

Info is scarce but they believe they were painted over with tan paint to wash out the markings. As for numbers, there is the I-25 on the tail which has been seen on some decal sheets and paintings. As for the others. Who knows!

This is a picture of I-25s Glen which was the only aircraft to bomb mainland USA in August 1942.

It is not Australia Post which has the restrictions, they only advise Australians what is possible thru the Postal system.

The restrictions are in Poland, they have various limitations on which mail they will handle.

Due to lack of international flights they do not accept mail for delivery to Australia by air. Currently they are accepting 'Economic Post' according to the Polish Post website, which I know from experience means Surface Mail.

Originally from memory there was no mail coming out of Poland but they have gradually lifted that. Don't be surprised however if the restrictions are put on again as the second wave bites.

The kit boxing will include the E14Y from I-25.

There is anecdotal information around about painting over the markings but no evidence that I have seen. I did mine as per the colour scheme suggested in the link.

I was interested in an item on ebay listed by a seller in Poland, so I messaged him/her and asked what the postage situation to Australia was. They replied "we send normal to your country"

I guess I'll find out in due course.

Have a look starting about the 13 minute 45 sec mark of this film ( and the preceding narrative) It states that the national markings at least were painted over/ obscured on this occasion- I-21's plane on 29/5/42- pilot WO Ito relating the story.

You may also have seen these links to info on the rec flights

and scrolling down to NSW flights, 4 over Sydney Harbour including those of a/c from I-25, I-29 and I-21.
This one relates to the flight referred to in the above film clip:

Thanks for the links Robert! Excellent!
And if I may say have one more word on the Poland postage issue, as if right on cue one of my orders from Poland arrived today, posted there on 21 Sept, so 29 days. Russia postage is 10-12 weeks by sea, but appears reliable.
Cheers
