Lancaster 'G' for George interior colours?

Postby admin » Tue Oct 06, 2020 7:04 pm

The Lancaster build I have just started is going to be 'G' for George using the Aussie Decals markings form a long time ago. My question is the interior colour - is it interior Green throughout the aircraft or is the front section black? If it is black, where did it start and how much did it cover?

This has been discussed a lot over on Britmodeller David, so may be worth a search.

A couple of posts that may help:

I did a heap of research on this for my Dambuster Lancaster a couple of years ago (including the threads Peter's given). I decided to go with RAF Interior Green for everything but the Bomb-aimer's section and turret interiors, based on the direction to paint the cockpit black coming out in late 1942 and I reckoned it would take a while to change the processes in the factories. Likewise, I went for green inside the flap wells. There are no colour photos of AJ-A that can prove me wrong!

When G for George was restored in the late 1990s I went to Mike Nelmes' book launch at the Treloar Centre where it was laid out in component parts for restoration. Notes from that time indicate that the interior was not restored, only preserved. From this log: https://www.awm.gov.au/about/our-work/p ... gforgeorge you can see the cockpit section was interior green as was the fuselage interior aft. This is backed up by photos from the 1950s which shows that pilots compartment was interior green with black fittings, black interior framework of the canopy and black seat (not sure if that was usual). The bomb aimers compartment was black with the hand rail yellow. See this photo from the early 1950s: https://www.awm.gov.au/collection/C259475 there is also https://www.awm.gov.au/collection/C36462 showing the wireless compartment as interior green and this shot of the cockpit interior showing G for George on delivery to Australia: https://www.awm.gov.au/collection/C264351and a later shot here: https://www.awm.gov.au/collection/C14668

Somewhere I have the photos I took of the interior of George from that visit - I'll see if I can find them.

Great info, thank you. I have seen a fair bit of discussion around the hand rail colour, and whether the yellow was a post war or restoration thing, but sounds like it was a WW2 service finish.
