No embedded links?

Postby Motty » Sat Jun 22, 2013 1:08 pm

G'day Guys,

I've noticed that it's not possible to embed links in the messages on this forum. i.e. make it so that you can click on some text or an image that will link to a page or web site.

e.g. when I post this text on other sites, it presents an image which, when clicked on, takes you to the original image / page.
[url="http://www.airfighters.com/photo/122071/L/Japan-Air-Force/McDonnell-Douglas-F-4EJ-Phantom-II/67-8390/"]Image[/url]

but, here, it just shows the broken text of the link and tags.

Is this an intentional feature or is it something which could be fixed?

Cheers,
Motty.

Motty, I can't find anything behind the scenes that would have any affect on what you have highlighted. I shall continue to look and see what I can find out for you.

Hi Motty, I have made some tests using your link as follows, first line is the code used, second the reaults:"

One
Code: Select all
[url="http://www.airfighters.com/photo/122071/L/Japan-Air-Force/McDonnell-Douglas-F-4EJ-Phantom-II/67-8390/"]test text1[/url]

[url="http://www.airfighters.com/photo/122071/L/Japan-Air-Force/McDonnell-Douglas-F-4EJ-Phantom-II/67-8390/"]test text1[/url]

Two
Code: Select all
[url]http://www.airfighters.com/photo/122071/L/Japan-Air-Force/McDonnell-Douglas-F-4EJ-Phantom-II/67-8390/ test text 2][/url]

http://www.airfighters.com/photo/122071/L/Japan-Air-Force/McDonnell-Douglas-F-4EJ-Phantom-II/67-8390/%20test%20text%202

Three
Code: Select all
[url=http://www.airfighters.com/photo/122071/L/Japan-Air-Force/McDonnell-Douglas-F-4EJ-Phantom-II/67-8390/]test text 3[/url]

test text 3

From these it is apparent that the syntax you used doesn't work, the second produces a dodgy URL, but the third works as advertised. The trick is to not include quotation marks. So reproducing your intended photo link using the following code:

Code: Select all
[url=http://www.airfighters.com/photo/122071/L/Japan-Air-Force/McDonnell-Douglas-F-4EJ-Phantom-II/67-8390"][img]http://www.airfighters.com/datas/photos/th200/855-mottys_photo_2012_11_16_3828_ltlr_1_001.jpg[/img][/url]

Be aware that using a website's link like this (hotlinking) might be against their terms of use, and is a rude thing to do anyway. People browsing this thread are using the bandwidth of that server just by viewing the image, no clicking required.

At best they don't care/allow it, at worst they use 'hotlink protection' which can be anything from a purposefully broken link, to a shaming pic (below) to porn/etc. You have been warned:

Best to steal the image you want and upload it to your own account somewhere. Imgur.com is a good one and has a plugin for browsers. Right-mouse click image > quick upload

G'day Steven,

Well, it's my own image and the link sends you to the sites' actual page, not just the image, thereby giving the site some exposure / advertising as well, so I thought it would be ok?

Cheers,
Motty.
